Rep. Colin Allred wins Democratic primary to challenge Sen. Ted Cruz in Texas

U.S. Rep. Colin Allred, D-Dallas, on Tuesday won the crowded Democratic primary race for the U.S. Senate, setting him up to challenge U.S. Sen. Ted Cruz in a fight this November for control of the upper chamber. While Allred faced a total of nine opponents in the primary, his toughest was state Sen. Roland Gutierrez of San Antonio. Gutierrez, whose district includes Uvalde, was catapulted into the national spotlight after he fought for gun-control legislation in the wake of the 2022 Robb Elementary School shooting.
